Stevie Nicks: Soundtrack of my life
The Fleetwood Mac veteran and solo star picks the music that has inspired her through her 40-year career.
”[Blonde in the Bleachers] is about a girl who [sings] “tapes her regrets to the microphone stand, she says ‘you can’t hold the hand of a rock’n’roll man for very long’”. I never saw myself as the girl in the song – I identified with the rock’n’roll star. I was never gonna be the groupie. I was the star, I was sure of that. I listen to that song to this day. It’s on the playlist I have for when I’m preparing to go on stage.”
Holy shit, this whole thing* is amazing. I would not have guessed that Stevie Nicks was so influenced by Joni Mitchell.
*I have erased the part at the end about John Mayer from my mind forever.I have a special affinity for anyone who grew up learning to harmonize to CSNY.
And any mention of Court and Spark drives me straight to “Down To You” and one of those listening sessions where I will keep my eyes closed and hold up one finger as a warning to anyone who dares disturbs me. God I love that song, and now I can’t help but hear a heavy dose of Joni in “Landslide” to “Bella Donna.” (More on loving the influencers as much as the influenced.)
A few weeks ago, I gained an instant girl crush on one of our summer lab members, who out of my Zune full of 3000 songs picked out CSNY to listen to as we did our lab work. And we both sang along, all the words to “Deja Vu” sliding out of mouths easy on a Thursday afternoon.
I become increasingly aware of the role CSNY played in my childhood, when we would put So Far on my parents’ turntable. ”Ohio” was a favorite then, but when I slip it on the turntable now, it’s “Helpless.” I fell in love with that song in the summer of 2008, the summer between my first two years of medical school. I’d just spent a whole year academically flailing like I never had in my life. The summer was hot, I had no air conditioning in my car, so I would wait to drive at night and skip the cd right to Neil Young’s voice singing about how helpless we are.
When my uncle played the guitar, it was always “Helplessly Hoping,” and his siblings would sing along. They always nail the harmonies, which is something I’ve yet to master.
“Suite Judy Blue Eyes” was a ringtone, for a while, and I’ve spent countless rainy days with So Far and Deja Vu in the ear buds while I sit in the hood. But my absolute favorite will always be “Our House,” which I remember my parents singing to us at kids. The gravity of them singing “and now everything is ‘cause of you,” is still hitting me, pulling me down. He doesn’t know it yet, but I’ve known since the first time I got engaged that the song I will dance to at my wedding with my father starts with a lit fire, a glass in a vase.
